John Clare was a working-class English poet. He worked as a farm hand, a gardener, a lime burner, a militia member, and even joined a Gypsy camp. In later life, he escaped for months from an asylum, before being turned back in. When his doctor was asked to list any mental strain that may have contributed to his illness, he wrote "After years of poetical prosing."
